A 30 foot long scaffolding pole..

Living in rural France has its benefits…

It’s beautiful…

It’s quiet…

And it’s also very peaceful…

However there is a problem….

No cabled Internet access…

In fact we don’t even have a phone line….

And mobile phone reception is virtually non-existent…

I rely on a satellite dish which delivers broadband via a company called two-way…

We have a business account which costs about £400 a month!!

We get a good connection speed which is fast enough for video streaming…

However it is not reliable….

Which can be challenging especially when doing webinars…

Over the last couple of years, our connection has been okay…

We get the odd day when the connection drops out for a few hours…

But overall we’ve been very happy with our satellite broadband connection…

Even if it does cost huge amount of money….

However recently , over the last six months…

Our connection has become incredibly unreliable…

In fact over the Christmas period our account got accidentally deleted!!

I couldn’t even get the company on the phone??

It’s really challenging trying to run Internet marketing company without an Internet connection!

Over the Christmas period I started doing some research for some alternatives…

Or at least a fallback option for when our Internet goes down….

I started following some YouTube channels about getting Internet connections for people who live in R.V’s (motor homes)

One of the options in America is something called a mobile phone repeater…

This is a device which amplifies the mobile phone signal and then rebroadcasts it in the house…

This would be excellent for us as our mobile signal here is very weak, and sometimes doesn’t work at all…

However after investigation these devices are illegal to use in Europe…

I then discovered that it’s possible to buy a broadband router that takes a mobile phone Sim card…

You can then attach external aerials with long cables, and put the aerials on the roof…

So I thought I’d give this a try…

I went on Amazon and ordered a, Huawei B525 Router and external aerials…

We first tried it out inside the house…

However it didn’t really work very well….

We then attached the aerial to a 30 foot long scaffolding pole and started walking around the property…

We managed to get a really good signal by the front gates….

Later we managed to get an even better signal in the attic with the aerial on the roof…

We’ve been doing some testing over the Christmas period with different Sim cards…

Some French some from the UK….

The ironic thing is on Monday we had the system up and running and working in the house the first time….

And our satellite broadband went down again….

We were able to just to switch over to the mobile broadband connection…

It all worked seamlessly…..

Apparently the satellite broadband company had suspended our account for no reason???

My next task is to get a French Sim card….

It just goes to show with a little bit of persistence you can usually find a solution that works…

Playing with drones

Six months ago I purchased a DJI Spark drone..

It seemed like a great idea of the time…

Having loads of fun flying a drone around our property in France…

After all, it would be a great way to get some amazing aerial photos of the property…

However when I got it home and got everything out of the box it looked a bit complicated…

I suddenly realised this was something I’d never done before!!#

I guess I hit overwhelm….

I put everything back in the box and it has stayed on the shelf for six months…

Basically I just kept telling myself I don’t have the time…

Over the Christmas period I finally unpacked everything and watched some YouTube videos on how to fly this thing…

Wow what fun….

And it wasn’t that hard to use…

The great thing about this drone is it’s really easy to fly…

And it also has a high definition video camera built-in…

I going to shoot some videos with it later in the month and share them with you in this newsletter…

So watch this space….

Have a great week whatever you’re doing….
