The lights were dim and the room was filled with tension…
I was sitting upright in my seat, my mind was racing with different possibilities.
The year was 2010 and I was attending my first big Internet marketing seminar.
They were about 300 people in the room and it was one of those events where they were selling something every 90 minutes…
The presentation I was watching was all about Twitter.
This woman on stage was showcasing a brand-new piece of software which could generate tens of thousands of followers to your account per week…
The software would also send out thousands of Twitter posts per week to these followers….
I remember getting very excited by this prospect…
I spent 2k that day and purchased the software…
When I got home I set the software up on an old computer I had in my flat.
My plan was to leave the software running 24 hours a day…
I remember thinking I’m going to make so much money from this!
To my joy after a couple of days I had about 30,000 followers on Twitter!
I Started to send out tweets….
And I started to get loads of traffic and clicks.
But you know how much money I made trying to promote products…
$0!!
Even after using the software for over a month the results were still terrible.
After 30 days one of my accounts had over 100,000 followers!
In that thirty-day period I did make one sale of seven dollars…
But that single sale ended up as a refund…
I wrote it up as a learning experience.
It taught me to not take shortcuts and to ignore any software products which promise this sort of thing…
Many years later Twitter introduced advertising.
The cool part was that the advertising was incredibly cheap.
I remember being a bit dubious so I decided to run a test in parallel with one of my staff, Catherine Ford.
We both completely independently ran adverts and got identical results.
Tons of very cheap clicks/traffic…
But absolutely no sales….
My thought was Twitter must be made up of loads of robots that are auto posting.
I remember thinking this must be just in the Internet marketing niche..
Fast forward to 2022…
Elon Musk purchases Twitter….
And it’s been revealed that maybe up to 1/3 of all Twitter users are robots!
I find this really interesting…
Elon musk has decided to clean up Twitter…
And he’s looking at different ways to do it…
There’s probably going to end up being some sort of paid subscription to verify your account.
I’m definitely in support of this…
Yes there will be less users but quality of the user’s will be much higher…
I suspect in a few months time advertising on Twitter will be very profitable.
You can follow me on Twitter here 🙂
Would really appreciate it if you could follow me.
Not quite sure what I should be posting their.
Let’s just see how things go.
Today I just posted a poll asking everybody what kind of content they would like me to create.
I’d appreciate your feedback….
Have a great Tuesday whatever you’re doing,
Sarah Staar
