Have you ever been afraid to ask for something?
Have you ever been afraid to take action?
Have you ever procrastinated?
Well from personal experience I can definitely say yes to all of the above.
In fact I procrastinated for two days before writing this newsletter….
But why?
Sometimes I find myself overthinking things…
Coming up with every reason I can think of not to take action…
I know a lot of people hate rejection…
In fact when it comes down to it I think a lot of people are scared of
failure..
However I found that some of my biggest successes have come directly from
failure…
Was I successful when I first tried Internet marketing?
Definitely not…
In fact I must of failed 10 or 15 times before I had any glimmer of
success…
My rejection therapy
Here’s the thing…
Most people fear rejection, myself included…
Over the last couple of months I’ve been trying a really interesting
experiment…
Whenever I go out, I try and get at least one objection from a complete
stranger…
The other day when I was in my local supermarket, Sainsbury’s…
I asked one of the supervisors if he could give me a tour of the warehouse
at the back of the store..
He said no..
Earlier today I went to Costa coffee asked for a 50% discount…
They said no…
I’ve been doing crazy experiments like this for the last couple of
months…
At first it was really hard….
However now it’s become second nature and relatively easy…
And occasionally people say yes…
even to crazy requests….
Back in April when I was in LA…
I was at a supermarket with a friend and asked for a discount on my
shopping..
The checkout lady asked me why…
I said because I was from out-of-town…
She then proceeded to pull out her staff discount card and swiped it
through the checkout to give me a discount….
Another time I was at a workshop and they’d run out of coffee cups…
The organiser asked if I could try and get a few paper cups from the local
Starbucks..
She said you can probably only ask for five or six…
Can you guess what I did…
I went into the Starbucks and asked for 200 coffee cups, for free…
The guy behind the counter gave me a weird look and said no…
I asked him why…
He couldn’t give me an answer…
He then referred me to the manager….
Eventually we negotiated and the manager gave me 50 coffee cups….
Probably my best objection that actually turned into a yes happened when I
was flying to America.
I was on the plane and I asked one of the stewardesses if I could go to
the cockpit and sit in the pilot seat.
Now I was pretty much 100% sure they would say no…
However to my amazement she said yes!!!
She said once we land stick around for 10 minutes and you can go into the
cockpit…
Be careful what you ask for, because
sometimes they say yes…
Now is all this rejection therapy helping me??
Absolutely…
It’s given me a huge amount of confidence…
Believe it or not I’m actually quite a shy person especially in social
situations…
But recently I seem to have had a lot more confidence…
Especially in approaching strangers in social situations….
Also I am not worried about rejections, especially in a sales situation…
I guess the thing about rejection therapy is it normalises you to
objections..
They simply don’t bother my any more….
Want to give it a try…..
Reply to this email and tell me any objections you had recently….
Now I wonder what my next objection should be???
I’m already thinking up weird and wonderful things to ask when I’m in the
airport in a couple weeks time on my way to LA…
Maybe I should ask if I can go up into the control tower….
